Diets
Don’t Work -
Overview
-
Diets
have been around since the early 1900’s. Why
so many diets and no permanent solution?
-
Fad
diets are good for one thing...they sell
books. Trends
in dieting often MIS-lead people
in to thinking that weight loss can be
permanently achieved by cutting carbs.
-
Diets
fail because most of them contradict
our basic metabolic need for a balanced
supply of carbohydrates, proteins,
fats, vitamins and minerals and water.
-
There is a secret to permanent weight
loss.
History of Diets
Americans have been
dieting since the early 1900’s, if
not earlier. However,
the FAD diets of the last 40 years gives
us a look at the MIS-information we have
come to accept.
1967 – The
Doctors Quick Weight Loss Diet
Created by Dr. Irwin Stillman,
this diet is the grandfather of the LOW CARB,
high protein diets. It’s focus was a diet
of cottage cheese, eggs, seafood, poultry
and meat. Fruits, Vegetables and grains
were virtually forbidden. At the height
of it’s popularity there were 20 million
followers.
1972 – Dr.
Atkins Diet Revolution
Most
people aren’t aware that Dr.
Atkins created this diet 33 years ago. The
basis for the diet, which hasn’t changed
much since, is a LOW CARB plan that lets
you eat all the fat you want as long as you
stay away from carbs.
1978 – The
complete Scarsdale Diet
Another
version of a LOW CARB, high protein diet.
1981 – The
Cambridge Diet
This was
a more restrictive LOW CARB, high protein
diet, which restricted the consumption of
solid foods. The only nutrition
allowed on this diet came from 2-3 protein
rich liquid meals per day, totaling a mere
320 calories (by comparison 1 McDonalds Bic
Mac without cheese has 576 calories….292
calories from fat by the way.). Because
of the restrictive approach and high protein
diet, many people following this started
having health problems ranging from upset
stomach to Gall Bladder problems and sadly,
30 people died as a result.
1980’s – Optifast
diet
This liquid
diet suffered the backlash and bad reputation
that was caused by the Cambridge Diet disaster
and only proves that liquid diets are not
safe.
1990’s – LOW
FAT
In the 1990’s FAT became America’s
# 1 enemy. Carbs were back IN and FATS
were OUT. The problem with cutting
out FAT completely is that the human body
needs fat to aid in the creation of cell
membranes, hormones and vitamin D. Additionally,
by removing FAT from foods, the manufacturers
needed to replace it with other substances
that would make their products taste good. So
they added more SUGAR. These foods
may have been low in fat content, but the
added calories from the sugars, creates an
oversupply of glycogen in the body which
eventually gets stored as FAT. So while
there was no FAT in the foods, the end result
was weight gain from eating the foods.
2000 – LOW
CARB is back again.
You
can see a trend here folks. IN
the last 40 years people have tried the LOW
CARB diets, then the LIQUID deits, then the
LOW FAT diets and now we are seeing a second
wave of LOW CARB diets…one in particular
is back and has a huge following.
The bottom line here is that – DIETS
DON’T WORK…let’s find
out why.
Why
Diets Fail
It is a fact that crash
dieting or hopping on the latest dieting
trend will result in weight loss initially, but in the long run
you will gain the weight back and in most
cases, you will gain more back than you originally
lost. LOW CARB diets and some other
fad diets can go to extremes in the approach
to losing weight which is impractical to
believe that you can live that way long term
and sometimes it can be harmful to your health.
Let’s take a closer look at LOW CARB
diets:
-
Diets that are low in carbohydrates
and have high does of protein, causes
the body to eliminate water weight, which
strains the liver and kidneys.
-
Initial weight loss on these diets is
most likely ALL water and NOT FAT.
-
Another side effect of LOW CARB dieting
is the production of Ketones. Ketones
are a substance which will suppress your
appetite (which will add to the initial
loss in weight from water depletion) and
can result in bad breath, gas, dizziness
and can contribute to gout, kidney and
heart disease.
-
Another significant problem with LOW
CARB dieting is that it makes it harder
to exercise because of the absence of Glycogen
= FUEL. We know that Glycogen comes
from carbohydrates primarily and a LOW
CARB diet with deprive your body of the
much needed fuel used for basal metabolic
functions as well as exercise (which by
the way is the ONLY NON-surgical way to
remove fat from your body).
-
LASTLY (and most important in understanding
why LOW CARB diets don’t work) LOW
CARB diets deprive you of the foods you
love and the human body needs…breads,
pastas, and fruits. These diets are
too hard for most people to stick to and
learn from, so you fall off this diet GAIN
ALL the weight back and look for the next
diet book on the shelf.
